Common Questions

Not at all! We use lead sheets, chord charts, and ear-based methods — the same approach most professional musicians use in real-world situations. Traditional sheet music has its place, but it's not the foundation of this course. You will need some basic musical knowledge though, which is why we recommend starting with our Foundations of Piano class if you're completely new to the instrument.

YouTube teaches you to copy songs note-for-note. I teach you to understand music so you can play anything. The difference is like learning to recite a poem versus learning the language itself. This course gives you the musical vocabulary, ear training, and creative tools to play songs you've never seen before, transpose them to different keys, and make them your own.

Absolutely, when the teaching method matches how you actually learn, most students are playing complete songs within the first few weeks because we focus on practical skills that build on each other logically. You won't be concert-ready in 12 weeks, but you'll be genuinely musical — able to sit down and play songs that move you and others.

You'll want to start with our prerequisite Foundations of Piano class first. This covers basic hand position, simple note reading, and fundamental concepts that will set you up for success in the main course. Think of it as your musical foundation — essential, but not overwhelming.

This course is perfect for you. Many of my best students are self-taught players who hit a wall with their current approach. We'll identify what's holding you back, fill in the gaps in your musical understanding, and give you the tools to break through to the next level. Your existing knowledge becomes a strength, not a limitation.

While we focus on popular music, chord-based playing, and contemporary styles, the skills you learn apply everywhere. Students have used these techniques for everything from classic rock and pop to jazz, folk, worship music, and even their own original compositions. The principles of harmony, rhythm, and expression are universal.

This course is designed for real life, not music school. We focus on efficient practice methods that make the most of whatever time you have. Many students see significant progress with just 20-30 minutes of focused practice a few times per week. Quality beats quantity every time.

Both formats are equally effective. Online lessons offer convenience and the ability to record sessions for later review. In-person lessons provide immediate physical guidance and energy. The choice depends on your preference and location — the teaching quality and personal attention remain the same.

Some of my most successful and joyful students started in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. Adult learners often progress faster than children because they have better focus, life experience to draw from, and clear motivation. Your musical journey starts when you're ready, not when you're young.

You'll need access to a piano or full-size keyboard (88 keys preferred). A digital piano with weighted keys is ideal, but we can work with what you have. I'll recommend specific models if you're looking to purchase. You'll also need a reliable internet connection for online lessons and access to simple apps I'll introduce during the course.

Many students continue with ongoing monthly lessons to keep growing, explore new genres, or work on specific projects. Others feel confident enough to continue their musical journey independently. Either way, you'll have the foundation and tools to keep developing as a musician for life.
